Vail gets new gondola
New gondola in Vail To celebrate Vail's 50th Anniversary, the ski resort is building a brand newstate of the art gondola that will replace the Vista Bahn lift in Vail Village.

Construction has already begun on the 10 passenger gondola that will feature heated seats and have Wi-Fi. Completion of the project is slated for November 2012, just in time for the opening of Vail mountain for the 2012 - 2013 winter season.

One of the main reasons to replace the existing Vista Bahn chairlift was to improve uphill capacity. With a speed of 1200 feet per minute, the gondola will be the fastest of its type in the world, creating a 40% increase in uphill capacity. The ride time will be only 7 minutes as opposed to the existing 9 minutes on the Vista Bahn.

Vail Resorts' acquisition of Kirkwood offers a great benefit to anyone traveling to the Tahoe region and planning to ski at Heavenly or Northstar which are also run by Vail Resorts. Whether you purchase the 'Tahoe Ticket' or one of the EPIC passes, you will have access to three fantastic Tahoe ski resorts.

"We are thrilled to welcome Kirkwood into our family as our seventh world-class mountain resort." said Rob Katz the Vail Resorts Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

"Kirkwood offers some of the most extraordinary ski terrain found anywhere in North America with high alpine trails and the most annual average snowfall in Lake Tahoe. Kirkwood represents skiing and riding at its purest, something we intend to retain and protect long into the future."

Kirkwood is widely known as one of Tahoe's premiere destinations for high alpine skiing and over 450 inches of annual snowfall. The resort features over 2,300 acres of terrain, terrain parks and a Boarder X course.

"When combined with Heavenly and Northstar, we will be able to offer our guests and pass holders unparalleled value with the very best that Lake Tahoe has to offer. We are excited to be able to offer Kirkwood to our pass holders right away - it's like opening day to a whole new season." Katz said.
